Prampram – Ghana
Masterplan & Site Integration
The Uzima Health and Wellness Resort in Prampram, Ghana, is a visionary project that harmonizes luxury, sustainability, and African cultural identity. The masterplan emphasizes a seamless integration of built and natural environments, positioning structures to minimize ecological disruption while maximizing panoramic views of the coastal landscape. Inspired by tropical design principles, the layout prioritizes cross-ventilation, natural lighting, and open-air spaces, creating a restorative atmosphere for wellness.
Sustainable Design & Rammed Earth Construction
Sustainability drives the architectural ethos. Rammed earth serves as a primary construction material, leveraging local soil to reduce carbon footprint while ensuring thermal efficiency and durability. This technique aligns with Ghana’s vernacular building traditions and modern environmental goals. The resort also employs recycled materials, such as aluminum and glass, to minimize plastic use, echoing UZIMA’s broader sustainability mission.
African Symbolism & Adinkra Integration
The design is deeply rooted in Adinkra symbols, which are woven into architectural elements, façades, and interior decor. Symbols like Sankofa (learning from the past) and Asase Ye Duru (reverence for the Earth) guide spatial narratives, fostering cultural connection and environmental stewardship. These motifs are not merely decorative but serve as educational tools, aligning with efforts to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through indigenous symbolism.
Inside-Outside Spatial Fluidity
Blurring boundaries between interior and exterior, the resort features expansive folding timber screens, shaded verandas, and poolside terraces. Openable windows and courtyards encourage natural airflow, while landscaped gardens with native vegetation enhance biodiversity. This design philosophy mirrors Ghanaian communal living traditions, promoting mindfulness through immersive nature engagement.
Business Strategy & Cultural Luxury
The business model merges eco-tourism with cultural education, targeting both local and international visitors seeking holistic wellness. Luxury is redefined through authenticity—locally sourced materials, artisanal craftsmanship, and Adinkra-inspired aesthetics. The resort also collaborates with communities to promote sustainable livelihoods, ensuring economic benefits aligned with cultural preservation.
Key Innovations
– Locally Sourced Materials: Rammed earth, reclaimed timber, and regional stone reduce reliance on imported resources.
– Resilient Architecture: Adaptive structures withstand coastal climate challenges, integrating rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems.
